DEAR PEGGY by peggy north, syndicated columnist

THE COMPUTER MATCHING SYSTEM WILL PICK UP YOUR RESUME, NOT A HIRING MANAGER

Dear Peggy: It is really frustrating and a scary thing to learn computer tracking device picks ups jobs applicants resumes and not a human being. I did not know that. You know, companies feed computers with keywords to chose qualified candidates. What happens to conscientious and expert hiring managers who used to evaluate experiences and accomplishments. It means if my resume does not contain key words triggering computer conditioned selection criteria, my resume will sit in the company data files until it rots! Holy cow, we are being hired by computer machines not by people. Can you believe this sh.....? Bobbie Greenshaw, Reno, Nevada, USA.

Yes, I believe this sh...! To further explore the matter, I e-mailed my own resume to a hiring company. This is what I got, Bobbie: "Thank you for your interest in Zurich North America.  Your resume will be retained in our computerized candidate tracking system for automatic skills/experience matching against existing and future positions.  When your experience, background and education match any of our positions, a Staffing Consultant will contact you for further discussion." A bloody answer! Isn't it! Sometimes, it is quite the opposite, for a review committee of qualified persons in the field evaluate resumes and applications. Here is  an illustrative sample of that situation; this is a copy of an answer one of our readers received from a company he applied to: Thank you for your resume for the available position located through JobsInSports.com.  We will have our review committee analyze your resume and attempt to match it up with that specific opening as well as ANY opening in our database in which there may be a realistic match.  This is a service that we are providing at no charge in order to make the process more efficient for all parties.  It is unfortunate that due to the high volume of resumes that we receive, we will only be able to contact those that our review committee deems qualified for this position. If you choose to handle your own job search, you can review thousands of available sports related openings by subscribing to our website at www.JobsInSports.com .  You can manage your own job search and browse jobs in sports administration, management, media, marketing, promotions, special events, sales, health, fitness, recreation and many more that you will not find in your Sunday paper. We look forward to the opportunity to help you climb the ranks of the sports industry! Best Regards, Brian Anderson, JobsInSports.com.  Employer Relations.
