BARBARA,
THE POETESS
Dear Max, Many thanks
for relating me to Renate Aller and Max Waldman. I like what you
say about my work and juxtaposing the African landscape with my late
mother's chair. In publishing my letter the other day and these
photos yesterday you are helping me to value and believe in
myself--something which is so difficult for most, if not all of us
to do. All the best! Barbara Singer. P. S. Since the first article
appeared, I have been writing poems or funny prose each day. Here
is what I wrote this morning.
I AM THE AUTHOR, NOT
THE LETTER
I,
Flesh-and-blood Barbara
Am just a messenger,
An old fashioned letter carrier
Or a new-fangled, electronic e-mail,
Carrying a letter to you,
Mr., Mrs., Ms. Unknown
Possible Friend,
Who are dying to get the letter,
Read it,
Chew it up,
Digest it,
Transform it
Into himself or herself,
Young, middle-aged,
Or old.
No. I am not the letter
Even though I wrote it.

Hello Marjorie:
Your article about the insults and
embarrassing jokes made by famous people about politicians and
celebrities amused me a lot. It was good, you wrote about men and
women. That was fair. My God, where did you find all these stories.
Unbelievable. Please keep on bringing good stuff like this. I learned
quite a deal about American men and women by reading the article. I
love your magazine. Francis Moriati, Roma, Italy.
WOMEN WRESTLERS MAKE
MORE MONEY THAN ROCKETS SCIENTISTS
Hi Marjorie: I could not believe it women wrestlers in America
make more money than rockets scientists. The piece you publish on the
divas of the ring was very informative. In England, women wrestlers
are not highly regarded. Usually, they come from a working class and
are not glamourous. In the United States, their counterparts are super
models. They are quite stunning. How come, you did not not write about
foreign wrestlers? Harley Roberston, Bristol, United Kingdom.
POLITICS
ON CAMPUS
Photo: The book jacket of David T.
Hardy's and Jason Clark's book, "Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid
White Man," is intended to debunk Moore's methods as "Fahrenheit 9/11"
hits theaters.
Dear Marjorie: George
Bush is playing dirty politics on campus. Hear this, George Mason
University on Thursday cancelled plans to have Fahrenheit 9/11
director Michael Moore speak on campus five days before the
presidential election. The decision came after a Republican state
legislator wrote a letter to university president Alan Merten
protesting the Fairfax school's plans to pay the filmmaker $35,000 US
to speak on Oct. 28. "We just felt it wasn't the most appropriate use
of (public) funds, so we decided the best thing to do was cancel,"
school spokesman Daniel Walsch said. Walsch said university officials
didn't discuss with Moore whether they would allow him to speak if he
waived his fee, nor did they approach student groups or other private
organizations to come up with the money. This is what they telling
everybody but I don't buy it. Bush is playing dirty tricks on our
campuses. Sam Reeves, Virginia, USA
