The New Wave of Divas and Femmes Fatales: Barb Jungr, Alison England, Jennifer Terran, Sophia Dalle, Cheryl Bliss...

Sophia
Dalle, relatively a newcomer to the world of operatic jazz and cabaret
is another explosive performer. This artist-singer-composer-actress is quite
unique. Drama is written all over her face and echoes her real life. She is
volcanic, for she has temper, four cats, one million three hundred thousands
Indian pillows, all the Ali Baba stories you need to hear and the most
romantically macabre and powerful voice ever to be heard on the plateau of
contemporary cabaret noire. You would sense her "Diva of the Underground"
flair and Salvator Dali-ish intoxicating persona in the arias she composes.
She is a strange blend of Edith Piaf, Janis Joplin and Nina Simone. Now, try
to figure this out!? She is working on her CD debut "My Beloved" and you
should expect a lot of emotion, truth, pain, complaints and painful artistic
beauty from Dalle. How would we rate Sophia Dalle's talent on a scale of one
to ten? We don't dare. And Dalle does not care! She wrote: "I crave your
smile against a darkened moon...Your fingers upon my flesh in lust and
love...Devouring my soul with your lips that leave...Me naked for the first
time in tormented sanctity." Unquestionably, she is a class by herself.
Dalle is the last Hurrah of the tragic era of early Parisian cabaret.
Nowadays, very few American cabaret singers can project the aura of an
authentic CABARET NOIRE like Sophia Dalle does with such an intense passion,
powerful voice and a pulverizing-intoxicating stage presence;. Dalle is a
pure emotional and melodramatic implosion of explosion of so much talents,
burst of life and a voice out of this world. She is obscure and unknown for
the moment, but hold your horses, this Grande Diva in the making is going to
make it big time. Hang on, Dalle, hang on "Diva of the Underground". I have
never heard such an emotional melodramatic truth coming from any artist,
since Edith Piaf. World Art Celebrities Journal's Valerie Constand
wrote: "A relatively newcomer to the cabaret scene in New York City. But
this American singer brings with her wealth of talents, originality and
mystifying artistic personality. She is not your common cabaret singer. She
is unusual in her stage appearance, her dialogue, her lyrics, most certainly
her looks and the message she conveys on and off stage. On one hand, she
could remind you of Gloria Swanson, the divas of the black and white movies.
And on the other hand, she projects you onto a futuristic world of music and
the sphere of a passionate and sensual cabaret of tomorrow." The New
York Jewish Post wrote: "An irresistible artist with intensity and
unsurpassed talent."
Cheryl Bliss. The
London's Monthly Herald described Bliss as one of the most
talented and innovative singers leading and steaming a wave of
most creative young singers in the United States. Cheryl has been in
the studio with Grammy-winning producer and engineer Mark Howard (U2, Bob
Dylan, Iggy Pop, REM) and bassist Daryl Johnson (Neville Brothers, Meters,
Emmy Lou Harris) recording material for her latest album. Her debut
album "Angels Running After” was just nominated CD of the Year by
Kweevak.com. It was also nominated Best Pop Album 2001 by the San Diego
Music Awards. The Herald raved about Bliss' CD. Grammy-winning producer
Daniel Lanois (U2, Peter Gabriel, Neville Bros.) compares Cheryl’s vocal
quality to that of singer Julee Cruise (of Blue Velvet fame), whom Lanois
says has “possibly the most beautiful ethereal voice ever.” Radio
personality Madison of KPRI Authentic Rock (102.1 FM San Diego) compares the
quality of Cheryl's songwriting to that of Aimee Mann. Ms. Bliss originality
is evidenced in the perfect unity between a jazzy flair, an evocative
musical interpretation and an ethereal voice. A perfect blend for an artist
who intends to add lyricism, warmth and vivacious tempo to American music
mainstream. And Bliss did it successfully. This is a world-class
singer. The Monthly Herald wrote: "Let
Cheryl Bliss sing in London, and she will take the city, its bridges, its
arts communities and music lovers by storm. She is a powerful singer,
angelic, lyrical, passionate and graceful. Rarely, we do find a powerful
performer with grace, or an angelic singer with passion.
Cheryl is this very rare
kind of artist.

Here is
a sample of lyrics this superb singer and seductive surrealistic diva sings:
"If you wait til the pieces fall into place
if you wait til you've found your own way to grace
If you wait til you're locked in a warm embrace
You'll never learn to trust...
If you wait til your passion has come alive
If you wait til you're strong enough to survive
If you wait til you lie in a box of pine
You'll never learn to trust."
