INTERVIEWS

Tête-à-tête with Lyne Tremblay

"I'm not interested in defining myself."

Q: Are you more of a Jazz Singer than a  CABARET DIVA?
Lyne: The word Diva bothers me. It's been over-used and misused. I also dislike classifications in art. It's for other people to discuss. I sing the music I like and let other people people put it in boxes.
Q: What "New Visions" did you bring to the world of Cabaret?
Lyne: I try to bring theatre to my music. I don't think it's a new vision but rather an old one done in a new way.
Q: What is a "Femme Fatale" to you?
Lyne: That's another term I've heard a lot. If it's a compliment I like it. If not ....
 Q: Are you one?
Lyne: Ask my husband.                                                                                                         Q: You have multidimensional talents, and.....different stage personalities. Would this "varied persona of an artist" deprives you from defining the Tremblay Genre?
Lyne: I'm not interested in defining myself. I find it self indulgent and limiting also boring.
Q: Then what is the "Tremblay Style"?
Lyne: I don't know. Maybe I'll read it somewhere. When I hear people say do it like Lyne Tremblay, I am always surprised.
Q: Only authentic Parisian cabaret artistes and stars include in their repertoire very traditional Parisian songs unknown to audiences outside France. The pre-war Parisian cafés chansons like the one you selected "J'attendrai." How do you select your cabaret repertoire?
Lyne: My grand mother used to sing it to me. I loved it for what she gave to me  in that song. It does not have to do with war but yearning, longing and the beauty of missing someone.
Q: What was the best gift you ever received?
Lyne: Life from my parents
Q: And the one you gave?
Lyne: Life to my daughters.

Tremblay: "Cabaret is another one of those terms for the purists."

Q: Is your wardrobe part of your personality? Tell me how?
Lyne: Yes it is. It affects the way I feel about myself. I get dressed in 5 minutes. Its a state of mind. Sometimes I feel elegant, sometimes I feel like a gypsy.
Q: What people notice first about you?
Lyne: That depends on their gender.
