Dear [Elected Official's Name]: Americans live in a country driven by up-to-the-minute communications: large cellular networks, handheld wireless devices, and broadband technologies help us connect faster, better, and more easily than ever before. Unfortunately, our nation’s first responders—the police, fire, and rescue crews that keep Americans safe—don’t have the same level of technology available to them. Our first responders deserve technology that lets them view video from their cars, check license plates and talk to other agencies instantly. In too many cities, radio spectrum that enables these technologies is not available. Thanks to Congress’s efforts in 1997, real progress was made toward enabling emergency responders to communicate rapidly and efficiently with each other. In fact, Congress even set aside space on the airwaves for emergency response. But since then, little has been done to clear the spectrum and enable first-responders to make use of technology that would help them communicate better, faster, and more efficiently than before. I urge you to do all that you can to clear the 700 MHz band of the spectrum for emergency communications within the next two years.
